Tim Cahill, Australia's all-time leading goalscorer, appointed Technical Director at Qatar Football Association

Socceroos legend Tim Cahill has taken up an exciting new role as Technical Director at the Qatar Football Association, where he is also Advisor to the President.
With 108 caps and 50 goals for Australia’s national team, Cahill is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer and the first Australian to score at a FIFA World Cup. In October 2023, the 43-year-old’s impressive record secured him a place in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
A lifelong footballer who ventured into the sport at the age of four, Cahill — who hung up his boots in 2019 — enjoyed a 21-year senior playing career that spanned four continents and seven clubs, and has been marked by international success and history-making moments for his country.
The UEFA Pro Licence holder signed his first senior contract with EFL Championship side Millwall in 1998 and was instrumental in the squad’s run to the 2004 FA Cup Final tie with Manchester United. Cahill scored the winning goal in the competition’s semi-final, clinching a UEFA Cup place for the team.
In 2004, Cahill moved on to Everton, where he became the team’s top goalscorer in his first season. During his eight-year tenure at the Premier League club, the Australian became the first Everton player in 18 years to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, and his extra-time winner against Luton Town in 2007’s League Cup took the side to their first cup quarter-final in more than five years.
The later stages of Cahill’s playing career saw him make the leap across the pond to the MLS, where he starred for the New York Red Bulls from 2012 to 2015. After a stint in China, the Socceroos hero returned to Australia to join Melbourne City in 2016. His final two spells as a player took place at former club Millwall and Indian Super League side Jamshedpur.
Since retiring as a footballer, Cahill has remained closely involved in the sport, working with Football Australia as Head of Delegation and serving as a Board Member for Belgium’s KAS Eupen. He has garnered coaching experience with Academy players at Everton and at the Qatar Football Association, where he’ll now play a key role in continuing the development and growth of the sport in the country.
