Mark Jackson Succeeds Nick Montgomery at A-League Champions, Central Coast Mariners
- An EFL journeyman throughout his playing career, former Leeds United U23 manager Mark Jackson takes the reigns at Central Coast Mariners ahead of another electric A-League campaign, fresh off a historic title-winning season
Following the departure of club legend Nick Montgomery at the end of last season, reigning A-League champions Central Coast Mariners have announced the appointment of Mark Jackson as the club’s new Football Manager.
Jackson, who most recently managed EFL League Two side MK Dons, hung up his boots in 2015 following a successful 20-year career with the likes of Leeds United, Scunthorpe United and Rochdale.
Capped by England at U20 level, Jackson graduated from Leeds United’s academy and broke into the first team as a teenager under then-manager Howard Wilkinson before being loaned out to gain experience and aid his development within the senior game.
Following loan stints with Huddersfield Town and Barnsley, Jackson secured a move to Scunthorpe United, making over 130 appearances and helping the club gain promotion back into League One in 2005.
Throughout his managerial career, Jackson has continually prioritised player development, particularly within younger members of the squad, which is one of the key driving factors in the Mariners pursuing his services.
Having produced some of Australia’s premier talent over the past few decades — including Newcastle United winger Garang Kuol, Socceroos legend Mitchell Duke, and former Celtic treble-winner Tom Rogic — Central Coast’s history of homegrown talent is one of the very best in the country, something that the former Leeds United U23 manager will be relishing.
Central Coast Mariners Sporting Director Matt Simon weighed in on Jackson’s appointment, expressing his excitement to be working with the Englishman:
“I’m really excited to welcome Mark to the club. After the very first conversation we had with Mark, it was very clear he is the right person to lead the club into the future.”
Simon continued: “His experience and track record with youth development was a standout and fits in with exactly what we want to continue to do at the club.”
Football Careers client Jackson spoke on his excitement at joining the Gosford side, and how the club’s philosophy of youth development aligns closely with his own:
“I am proud and extremely excited to be joining the Central Coast Mariners. To be a part of a club with a community and family feel, that wants youth players to come in and that everyone on that pitch wants to give everything for is really nice and something that I want to see continue.
“I want to play front foot football and dominate every part of the game. That is my philosophy, that is how I want my teams to play, and that is what I will bring to the Central Coast. The club is in a fantastic position, so I want to continue that good work and help the club grow and continue to move forward.”
