Jonny Burns appointed to key MLS Next coaching role at Boston Bolts
- The former Celtic FC Academy coach takes up his third position in the US, having moved Stateside in 2016 to pursue an international coaching career
Jonny Burns continues to tick off the east coast states on his American coaching journey. Football Careers client Burns has this week been appointed to a senior leadership role at FC Greater Boston Bolts, the oldest soccer club in Massachusetts.
The Scot — son of late Celtic legend Tommy — takes on the post of MLS Next Head Coach, with specific responsibility for the Under 15 and Under 19 groups.
For Jonny, it represents another progressive step in his coaching career in the USA.
After seven years as a coach at Celtic FC’s famed Academy, he switched to the United States to become Director of Coaching at Florida Celtic Soccer Club in 2016, before moving to North Carolina in 2022 as Head Coach of the Charlotte Independence Pro Academy. He said:
“I have enjoyed many highlights at Charlotte Independence. I am so proud that six Academy players have signed 1st team contracts and that the U19s qualified and competed at the national play-offs. It has been a fantastic learning curve for me and I look forward to the next chapter in Boston.”
Besides his impressive career in the football development sector, Burns is also Executive Director of the North American Scottish Coaches Association.
His latest role with Boston Bolts, who utilised the services of Football Careers in their recruitment process, will see him overseeing the club’s analysis programme as well as being part of the club’s Technical Leadership team for the 2023/24 season.
